Double Gold for Kent Archers at the All British and Open Field Championships!

What a weekend for Kent archery! The prestigious All British and Open Field Championships took place recently at the stunning (and notoriously challenging) Pentref Bowmen course in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales.

Field archery is a true test of skill, judgment, and stamina, but two of Kent’s finest rose to the occasion, bringing home an incredible haul of medals and titles.

🥇 Hannah Brown: Dominating the Compound Field

A massive congratulations to Hannah Brown, who put on a masterclass performance in Wales. Hannah claimed the Gold medal and the national title in the Women’s 50+ Compound category.

As if individual gold wasn’t enough, Hannah was also selected to represent her country and played a pivotal role in anchoring the victorious England team to the top of the podium.

🥇 Ethan Fagg: The Future of Barebow

The future of Kent archery is looking incredibly bright thanks to young talent like Ethan Fagg. Competing in the Under 14 Boys Barebow category, Ethan showed nerves of steel and fantastic precision to secure the Gold medal. Winning a national title at such a young age is a phenomenal achievement.

A Proud Moment for Kent

Pentref Bowmen is famous for its steep terrain and unpredictable valley weather, making these victories even more impressive. To come away with two individual national champions and an international team gold is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent we have in our community.

Congratulations to both Hannah and Ethan! You have done yourselves, your clubs, and the entire county of Kent incredibly proud

Big Success on the Field: Double Judging Upgrade for Kent!

Over the last couple of weeks, two of Kent’s very own judges have undertaken practical on-field assessments as part of their official upgrade journey through the Archery GB Judging pathway.

For those who might not be aware, there are four domestic judging grades in the UK. Each step up the ladder brings new responsibilities, deeper expertise, and greater opportunities to lead major events:

  • 1. Candidate: The starting level. Pull on the uniform, show up, gain valuable on-field experience, and help judge events alongside qualified officials.
  • 2. County: Represents the first fully qualified, official tier in the Archery GB judging pathway.
  • 3. Regional: This is where things get really interesting! As a Regional judge, you can step up as the Judge in Charge of Record Status tournaments (that do not include head-to-head matches).
  • 4. National: The highest domestic level. On top of overseeing Record Status tournaments with head-to-head matches, National judges can be appointed as the Judge in Charge of major national events.

We are thrilled to share some fantastic news regarding two of our local officials moving up these ranks.

Congratulations to Erin Barkway – Now a Regional Judge!

A few weeks back, Erin Barkway travelled to Waterside Archers in Hampshire, where she successfully passed her practical assessment to become a Regional Judge.

This is a brilliant milestone in Erin’s judging career. If you are a Tournament Organiser planning an upcoming shoot and need a Chair of Judges or a reliable official for your field party, please consider reaching out to Erin for the role!

Congratulations to Marc Carroll – Now a County Judge!

The success didn’t stop there. This past weekend, our very own County President, Marc Carroll, took his next official step on the field and successfully passed his assessment to become a fully qualified County Judge.

Balancing committee duties with official training is no small feat, and we are incredibly proud to see Marc expanding his credentials out on the shooting line.

Want to Get Involved?

Our sport quite literally cannot run without the dedication of our judges. It is a highly rewarding way to stay involved in archery, see the sport from a new perspective, and support your fellow archers.

If anyone wants to know more about how to get started as a Candidate judge, or if you are interested in a taster day, please get in touch with us!

Pure Gold: Highlights from the 4-Way Inter-County Match

What a fantastic day of archery! On Saturday, February 21st, The Sittingbourne School played host to the highly anticipated 4-Way Inter-County Indoor Match. The atmosphere was electric as the finest archers from across the region gathered to represent their home counties.

The competition saw a fierce but friendly showdown between Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, and Essex. With Recurve, Compound, Barebow, and Longbow teams all taking to the line, the hall was a spectacle of precision and focus.

A Record-Breaking Performance

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly a masterclass in Compound shooting. We were honored to have Paralympian Jodi Grinham on the line, who put in a world-class performance.

Jodi didn’t just win her category; she set a new GB National Record, proving exactly why she is one of the best in the business. Seeing that level of excellence in person—and watching a record fall—was an inspiration to every archer in the hall.

The Results Are In

The level of talent on display across the board was truly impressive, with matches often decided by just a handful of points.

  • Congratulations to the overall winners! Whether you were taking home a medal or hitting a personal best, your dedication was evident in every arrow.
  • Full Results: You can view the full breakdown of scores and rankings on Ianseo here: Match Results – 4-Way Invitational

A Community Effort

Events of this scale require a mountain of behind-the-scenes work, and we owe a massive debt of gratitude to the team that made it happen:

  • Hannah Brown: A huge thank you for your meticulous work in coordinating the entries and managing the administrative side of the tournament. Your organization kept everything on track!
  • Adam: Thank you for providing the facilities and leading the work party. Your efforts in setting up the range and ensuring the equipment was ready for the line were essential to the day’s success.
  • The Sittingbourne School: We also extend our sincere gratitude to the school for providing such an excellent venue. The facilities were top-notch, and the warm welcome made all the difference for the visiting teams.

To the Archers

Finally, thank you to every single archer who took part. You represented your counties with pride and sportsmanship. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie between the four counties, reinforcing why the archery community in the South East is so special.

Keep hitting the Gold, and we’ll see you at the next one!
